Down to memory lane
We are almost the same age gap (if not close) when you understand what I meant in this entry. Come and lets take a walk …
The best games at school are ropes jumping (made out of rubber-bands tied together) and 5-stones (made out of scrap of clothes filled with red beans/rice). We'll played during recess, before class start and after school while waiting for the school bus.
Every student will be holding a bunch of books with the book-band tied around them. That's the trend at school! To show off we are bunch of hard working students la. But nowadays I don't see students carry that anymore. I guess book bands are no longer the in-stuff!
During exercise session in school, we can run around the field with just t-shirts and shorts. Unlike now all students are compulsory to wear long slacks in our humid weather! No wonder we produce lousy sportsman!
The noodle in the school canteen only cost 50 cents per bowl and the kacang putih 20 cents per pack (ok the noodle above is not what we get in school, the miserable bowl of noodle only consists of one small lump of mee plus 2 pieces of fish cake) .
Hello Kitty was so in and all are genuine stuff. We don’t know any imitations/fakes and save all our allowance just to buy the stickers, stationery, purse, etc. I am still in love with Hello Kitty today.
Before Game Boy, PS1 or Xbox, the only electronic game available is the handheld brick game.
There was a famous Japanese series shown at TV around 4.00 p.m. every Monday and Tuesday, where this girl who join the volleyball team and she will flip in mid air before she spikes! Her skill is so amazingly real that we all believe she can actually do that.
The only Chinese shows in the TV are those Lam Ching Ha and Ching Han Taiwanese version love story. Both will played lovers and each will be running from the opposite end of the beach with their hands flying in the air. They will then come together, hug hug, hold hands before singing a duet! I think the Bollywood chaps get their ideas from the Taiwanese.
As for American sitcoms, there are 21 Jump Street and Beverly Hills 90120. That’s where we get to know Johnny Deep and Luke Perry.
Before the purple dino Barney exist, a cute little blue man character captured our hearts with the funny cartoons. They are called Smurfs!
One of the famous public transport is mini buses, where most of the drivers are born F1 racer. We don’t even need to go all the way up to Genting for a roller coaster ride!
The only hang out place is Sg Wang and the only Yum Cha place is usually KFC. There are no HK char charn theang.
During Chinese New Year, the cinema will always have Stephen Chow Sing-Chi's movies. We will be queuing up hours before the ticket counter open to get the best seats! We just love his moe lei tau (silly) storyline and will laugh until our lungs fell off! After 2 hours standing in line and when you are almost there at the ticket counter, some mook jui (jerk) will creep up by your side and ask if they can tumpang 6 tickets from you! Once I encountered the same incident and not only I did not buy for him but told him to get in line like everybody else! He complained to his bunch of friends that I’m very chuen (nasty). He can only blamed himself for picking the wrong ‘victim’.
The only cinemas we know are not TGV or GSC but Sg Wang Cinema, President or Cathay. The only sounds effects that are louder than the movie itself are those people chewing kuah chi and throwing them everywhere. That's why we need to wait for 1/2 hour before going in the cinema as the workers have to sweep the floors after each movie. There are no electronic tickets only manual ones and you have to pay extra $1 if you want to exclusive seats, which is high above.
Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, Alan Tam, Sally Yip, Jacky Cheung are my favorite singers before Sammi Cheng. Their songs are still so well known till today. From the western side, MJ is the world phenomenal and the only boy band is New Kids on the Block. Singers don’t name themselves 50 cents (I guess they only worth that much to have such a pathetic name!) or Pussycat Dolls where their only talent is to show as much skin as possible in their MV. By the way, anyone still remember Tommy Page?
And talk about the fashion ... it's shoulder pads and carrot cut trousers. The funny thing is there are some people who are still wearing that carrot cut trousers today.
Those were the days. How I miss them sometimes. Yes, we need to change with the world so that we'll not be left out but it's good that I experienced the above because they are part of my life. Do you remember your era?
